Chinotto (Citrus myrtifolia) is a very particular cultivar of Bitter Orange. It is supposed to have originated in China (hence its common name), and was present in the Medici gardens since the 16th century. It is a tree with great ornamental value, as its fruits remain on the tree for a long time. Its leaves are small and reminiscent of those of the common myrtle (hence its scientific name).
The fruits of Chinotto are like small tangerines and very bitter. In addition to the preparation of marmalades, it is also consumed candied whole, being a very appreciated dessert. Traditionally it has been used as a liver tonic, and in Italy it is used for the preparation of numerous refreshing drinks, known generically as chinotto.
