Art Collection

Todolí Citrus Foundation is an institution dedicated to the study, conservation and dissemination of citrus diversity, yet its roots are deeply connected to the world of art. This connection forms part of the Foundation’s own history and of the career of its founder, Vicente Todolí, who has devoted much of his professional life to curating and directing international art institutions. His passion for citrus and his commitment to contemporary art have given rise to a project in which both fields coexist and enrich one another.

From this relationship emerge multiple connections that reveal the fascination citrus fruits have inspired — and continue to inspire — in science, culture and artistic creation. The Foundation’s Art Collection brings together a diverse group of works that reflect these interests and the different paths that have shaped the project over time. Built through acquisitions, donations and collaborations with artists, the collection establishes a dialogue between contemporary art, the history of botanical representation and the visual culture associated with citrus fruits.

Among its holdings are engravings, illustrations and historical publications dedicated to the study of nature, including notable examples from botanical and pomological treatises produced between the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries by authors such as Giovanni Battista Ferrari, Johann Christoph Volkamer and Alexandre de la Motte Crommelin. These works bear witness to the scientific, artistic and cultural fascination that citrus fruits have inspired throughout history.

Alongside this historical heritage, the collection includes works by contemporary national and international artists who, through a wide range of languages and sensibilities, have chosen to contribute to the Foundation’s project. Painting, photography, drawing, sculpture, installation and graphic art form an open collection that continues to grow thanks to the generosity of artists and the Foundation’s commitment to the preservation and dissemination of contemporary art.

This section presents a selection of works and artists represented in the collection. Its contents will be expanded progressively through new acquisitions, donations and research, offering further opportunities to explore the richness and diversity of a collection that continues to grow alongside the Foundation itself.

Each work in the collection has its own story. Some emerge from the observation of nature, while others stem from research, memory, or artistic experimentation. Together, they form a diverse body of works that reflects the many ways of approaching the world of citrus fruits and the relationships between art and nature.
