Origin data

The Satsuma Wase is the result of a spontaneous mutation that occurred in the common satsuma, first identified in 1895 by Nagoji Kawano in Ōita Prefecture. Its main differences from the original are its early ripening and high productivity. The designation "wase" ("early") is added to the various cultivars of early satsumas that have been developed.

Tree and fruit description

Very productive tree, but of small size and slow growth. Small leaves, dark green in color with smooth edges. Produces flowers and fruits in clusters. The fruit is spherical and slightly flattened at the poles, of medium size. The bark is smooth, very thin, intense orange in color, and easy to peel. Seedless. The flesh is a characteristic dark orange color, juicy, sweet, and with a slight acidity.

Uses

Fresh consumption.
