Origin data

The Rangpur lime is not actually a lime, but rather an acidic mandarin resulting from the crossbreeding between an ancient mandarin and a citron. This event likely took place in the same center of origin of citrus fruits, as it seems common to find varieties of Citrus limonia in India, China, or Myanmar. The yellow Rangpur lime variety could be a more recent mutation originating from an unknown location, and it was selected because its fruits, once ripe, do not reach the orange color of the Rangpur lime, but instead remain yellow.

Tree and fruit description

Tree with a more open stature and less dense foliage than the original Rangpur. Medium-sized, round fruits with flattened poles, a small apical nipple, and minimal basal crown. They may show faint longitudinal ribs. Slightly pitted bark, of medium thickness and aromatic. Pulp moderately juicy, yellow-green in color, with well-defined septa and aromatic. Juice with mild acidity, bitter and aromatic, with a complex flavor. Contains seeds.

Uses

Both the peel and the juice can be used as substitutes for lemon or lime when a less pronounced acidic character and an aroma closer to that of cider are desired.
