Origin data
Lipo is the result of a natural hybridization between a Lemon tree and a Grapefruit. Although its origin is unknown, it is known to have gained popularity from the 1970s onward. It has since become a common variety in British gardens, likely due to its presence in the collection of Kew Gardens (London), from where the name Imperial Lemon is probably derived. The plants and fruits of this hybrid typically arrive in the United Kingdom from Italy, as it is a very popular variety in Tuscany, as well as in Liguria.
Tree and fruit description
Very vigorous tree with large, oval leaves and dark green color. Large, white flowers that are usually grouped in clusters. Rounded fruits, larger than lemons and with a characteristic basal neck. Yellow, thick, perfumed bark with a pleasant taste. Rich in essential oils. The pulp shows characteristics of both parent plants, as it has the taste of lemon mixed with the bitter aroma of grapefruit.
Uses
The peel is used for gratings and cocktails. Its juice, sour but pleasant, is a good seasoning for fish and salads.
