Calamondin (Citrus madurensis) is a unique hybrid, the result of a natural cross between a kumquat and an old mandarin. It is very abundant in the Philippines (where it is known as calamansi) and the Malay Archipelago, although it is probably originally from China.
Tree of great ornamental value, productive and re-flowering. Its fruits are small and spherical, with a sweet rind and tender, juicy, sour and acid pulp. In Philippine cuisine it is used as a condiment, replacing the lime. It is also used in drinks, to marinate fish and meat, or in the preparation of sweets. In Malaysia, the whole fruit is fried in coconut oil and used to prepare curries.
