Canarone (Citrus limonimedica) is an ancient hybrid variety of Citron, known in Florence (Italy) since the 17th century. Its origin is unknown. Its name may derive from Canaro, the ancient place name of the Riviera Cannero, near Lake Maggiore (Italy), an area where it has possibly been cultivated for centuries.
The tree is vigorous and produces fruits that are small among the citrons, characterised by a rough rind, which reaches an orange color at maturity, and varied morphology. The fruits are acidic and their albedo is not edible fresh. They are used in pastries and sweets.
