Origin data
Gallo is a cultivar of Tarocco selected in Sicily (Italy) for its precocity and the organoleptic quality of its juice. It is linked to the citrus-growing area of Catania (Sicily). The original selection was stabilized in 1985 at the Citrus Research Center, CREA, in Acireale (Sicily). It is one of the most representative Taroccos of Sicilian citrus cultivation.
Tree and fruit description
Vigorous tree with a tendency towards a rounded shape that, on the other hand, is not uniform, giving an uneven appearance to the crown. Productive, with dense foliage and lanceolate leaves that may have small thorns. Spherical fruits, although they can be slightly oval, with good size among the Taroccos. Medium-thick bark, smooth and very finely pitted, orange in color and usually shows no pigmentation with anthocyanins. Bright orange pulp, juicy, sweet, and with little acidity. It exhibits internal pigmentation, but being an early variety of Tarocco, this is very dependent on temperatures. The pigmentation is concentrated along the septa that separate the segments. The mature fruit does not hold well on the tree. It has no seeds.
Uses
High-quality cultivar for fresh consumption. Its juice is sweet and aromatic.
