It is one of the most widely distributed paperbarks in Asia naturally. Its scientific name refers to the morphology of the petiole of its leaves (in Greek: macro, "big," ptero, "wing").

Tree and fruit description

Moderately vigorous tree with slow growth. Large, broad, lanceolate leaves with a large winged petiole and a characteristic aroma. Medium-sized fruit, similar to an orange, with a pear-shaped or subglobose morphology and a smooth apical nipple. Very aromatic bark, smooth and adhering to the pulp, initially bright green, turning yellow at maturity. Greenish-yellow pulp, low in juice and very aromatic, characterized by its very bitter taste due to the presence of acrid oil. It has seeds.

Uses

It is consumed green between September and November. In Bangladesh, the juice is used as a condiment in meat and fish stews, and the bark is used in the preparation of curry. In some parts of Asia, the bark is consumed fresh as a vegetable. Its juice provides characteristic aromas and flavors.
