Origin data

The Ponkan mandarin is considered an ancient mandarin, closely related to ancestral mandarins, as its genome contains less than 10% Pummelo genes. Its origin is established in India, but its name comes from the Chinese characters used to designate it. It apparently arrived in Europe in the early 19th century. This mandarin is known by the names batangas in the Philippines and nagpur suntara in India. During the 20th century, it was possibly the most cultivated mandarin in the world. It is characterized by the organoleptic quality and morphology of its fruits. It has given rise to important commercial varieties, such as the ‘Dekopon’ cultivar.

Tree and fruit description

Vigorous and productive tree, with predominantly erect growth. Lanceolate leaves of dark green color. Large fruits among mandarins, mostly globular in shape, but characterized by a short basal neck ending in a crown, and having a depressed and generally ribbed apical zone. Thick but easy-to-peel rind, which reaches a bright orange color at maturity. Bright orange pulp, juicy and sweet-tasting with a slight bitter touch. It has seeds. The fruit does not hold well on the tree once mature.

Uses

Its main use is for fresh consumption. Given its productivity and the appearance of its fruits, it is also used as an ornamental or patio tree. The segments can be used in salads or fruit salads. The sweet combination with a hint of bitterness in its juice is ideal for preparing sauces for meats.
