Origin data
The origin of the Pompia variety is unclear. It is known to be an endemic variety from the island of Sardinia, likely obtained through the selection of mutations from other citron lemon trees, or through hybridization. Currently, it is a well-established variety in Sardinia, but it was nearly lost and was recovered from a few trees as part of a Slow Food project.
Tree and fruit description
It is characterized by producing medium-sized, flattened fruits that are generally extremely rough, although it also produces less rough fruits. The peel is thin, bright yellow in color, and hard. The albedo is not edible. The pulp and its juice are very acidic.
Uses
Its most well-known use is the preparation of the typical sweet from Sardinia called Sa Pompia Intrea. It is used for candied fruits and the production of liqueurs. Its essential oils are used in cosmetics.
