Paradisi sour lemon

Varietal Group:

Lemons and their hybrids

Origin:

Unknown

Availability:

November - June

Origin data

It is a hybrid between a lemon tree and a citron, of unknown origin but related to the tradition of citron lemons from Tuscany (Italy). There are descriptions of its fruits in 17th-century Italy.

Tree and fruit description

The fruits are medium-sized, with the typical ellipsoidal shape of lemons, but with a flatter base and a slightly aureoled apical nipple. The rind is semi-rough and very fragrant, with visible essential oil glands. The albedo is edible and thick. The pulp is pale, acidic, crunchy, and not very juicy. It is considered one of the most interesting varieties from a nutritional standpoint.

Uses

It is consumed fresh. The zest, grated, can be used to season sweet or savory dishes, and whole to flavor soft drinks and alcoholic beverages. The albedo can be used fresh (in salads) or cooked (in purees, sauces).
