The island of Ischia is located in the Gulf of Naples (Italy) and has a long tradition of citrus cultivation, especially lemon trees. The Red Pummelo of Ischia is a selection made on the island that is characterized by its cold resistance and the red color of the flesh of its fruits.
Tree and fruit description
Vigorous tree with an open habit and large dark green leaves with rounded tips. Large fruits with globose or subglobose morphology. Smooth, mottled bark that reaches a light yellow color at maturity. Intense pinkish pulp, almost red, due to the presence of lycopenes. Large juice vesicles that are easily separable, although they do not contain excessive juice. Flavor with a tangy note that contrasts with the typical bitterness of the pomelo. Large central axis. It has seeds.
Uses
It is consumed fresh, as a side with meats or fish, or in green or fruit salads.
