Origin data

This acidic citrus fruit goes by various common names. In Europe, it is known as Moi, likely in honor of the city of the same name in former French Indochina. In the Philippines, it is called Catmon, and in India, it is known as Gajanimma, from where it is presumably originally native. It is a particular variety in that it possesses some morphological traits of the Pummelo, but its fruits are much more acidic. It is characterized by its resilience to different growing conditions, making it a good rootstock for other citrus fruits.

Tree and fruit description

Very vigorous tree, with numerous spines, having a rounded shape with branches that tend to droop. Large, dark leaves with winged petioles, oval morphology, and typically serrated margins. Large, rounded fruits that are flattened at the apex, where they may show an incipient nipple. Thick bark, bright yellow when mature. Aromatic. Flesh is light yellow, almost white, not very juicy, acidic, and bitter. Contains seeds.

Uses

Given its morphology, the tree has ornamental value. Its main use is as a rootstock for other citrus fruits. In Asian cuisine, its juice is used to dress fish.
