Varietal Group:
Limes and their hybrids
Origin:
Unknown
Availability:
September - May
Origin data
The Mohtasseb lime has an unknown origin, but it is likely from the eastern islands of the Pacific Ocean. Genetic studies of its composition suggest that it may be a hybrid between an acid lime (different from the Mexican lime) and a citron. It is characterized as a triploid hybrid with seeds, where the double genetic contribution would come from the maternal parent, the lime.
Tree and fruit description
Medium vigor tree, with a tendency for open growth. Typical lime leaves, somewhat larger. Medium fruit among limes, oval in shape, with a small apical nipple and a tendency to show a soft basal crown. Smooth, thin, and hard bark, even in advanced stages of ripening, where it reaches a soft yellow color. Very aromatic. Pale yellow pulp, juicy, very acidic, and with a slightly bitter, almost spicy touch. Contains some seeds.
Uses
Very interesting variety as a substitute for lemon or lime, as both its peel and juice are very aromatic and distinctive.
