Origin data

The Meyer Lemon is not a true lemon, although it is the result of an ancient hybridization similar to that which gave rise to lemon trees, specifically between an ancestor of the Bitter Orange and a Citron. Its name honors the work of the American plant explorer F.N. Meyer, who introduced this variety to the West from China in 1908. Initially, it was valued for its ornamental qualities, as a substitute for lemon and lime with greater resistance to low temperatures. However, the fragility of its fruit during post-harvest treatments hindered its commercial success in the fresh fruit market.

Tree and fruit description

Vigorous and productive tree, but not reaching a large size. Shrubby growth habit, with an open form. Intermittent flowering throughout the year. Medium-sized fruits, with elliptical-rounded morphology. Thin and smooth bark, yellow with a slight orange tint when ripe. Likewise, the flesh is yellow-orange, very juicy, with moderately acidic and aromatic juice. It has seeds.

Uses

It can be used as a substitute for lemon or lime in dressings, marinades, desserts, or beverages.
