Bitter Oranges and their hybrids
Origin:

Availability:

Origin data
The Bergamots are the result of a natural hybridization between a bitter orange tree and a lemon tree, which is why they are characterized by the richness and depth of their aromas. The Mellarosa Bergamot owes its name to its aroma, which is reminiscent of roses. It is a historical variety as it was already present in the Medici gardens in the 17th century.
Tree and fruit description
Small-sized tree, vigorous and very productive. Oblong leaves with a rounded and obtuse tip (the upper side folds over the central vein) and a distinct aroma. Medium-sized fruits, predominantly globular in shape with rather flattened poles, although many are irregular. Since ancient times, it has been recognized for its "star-like" morphology. Bark characterized by external longitudinal ridges, corresponding to the septa that separate the segments. It is a soft yellow color and very aromatic. Pale yellow pulp, juicy, bitter, but with pleasant flavor and aroma. It has some seeds.
Uses
Its leaves can be used to flavor beverages, just like its bark. The juice can be an interesting and complex condiment, as a substitute for table lemon. The tree has ornamental value.
