Origin data

The Meiwa Kumquat is the result of a natural hybridization between the Nagami kumquat (oval) and the Marumi kumquat (round), which occurred in China during an indefinite period. From there, it made its way to the southwest of Japan, where it is also known as Neiha kinkan. It is one of the best kumquats for fresh consumption, but it is not as well-known in the West as its parent varieties.

Tree and fruit description

Vigorous and productive tree with a rounded habit. Round fruits, although they can be slightly oval. Smooth orange bark with a characteristic yellow speckling. Both the bark and the albedo are thicker than those of its parents, but still edible. Acidic pulp, but scarce. Contains seeds.

Uses

This combination of a thick rind and high albedo with the scarcity of acidic pulp makes its fresh consumption particularly tasty.
