Mak Nao San

Varietal Group:

Lemons and their hybrids

Origin:

Laos

Availability:

September - January

Origin data

In many cases, the Mak Nao San is considered a Citron, but it is actually a lemon tree (a mix of Pummelo, Mandarin, and Citron) that contains more Pummelo genes than other similar hybrids. It is believed that its origin may be in Laos, since “Mak nao” means “citron” in their language.

Tree and fruit description

Compact tree with moderate vigor that holds mature fruit for a long time. Large, dark green leaves, lanceolate, shiny, and similar in shape to lemon tree leaves. Fruit of medium size and cylindrical morphology, with a small pyramidal apex, and may have a more or less noticeable neck. Slightly bulging, thin bark that is purplish at first, turning green and finally yellow when fully ripe. Very aromatic. Noticeably thick albedo, but bitter. Moderately juicy pulp, yellow-green in color with a mild acidic taste. Contains many seeds.

Uses

The bark can flavor hot or alcoholic drinks. The juice is a good seasoning for fish and soups.
