Origin data

Lemonade falls within the group of Sweet Limes. It is likely a natural hybrid between some type of Sweet Orange and a Meyer Lemon or similar. It is unclear whether it originated in New Zealand or Australia, although it seems that it was an Australian nursery (Engel’s Nursery) that propagated and popularized it in the late 1980s. Its commercial cultivation remains limited and is focused in the regions of Northland in New Zealand and Queensland in Australia, as well as in some areas of California and Florida (USA). It is also popular as a garden tree. It is characterized by producing fruits whose juice has the perfect balance between sugars and acidity, making it suitable for consumption as a freshly squeezed lemonade, hence its name.

Tree and fruit description

Vigorous tree with vertical shoots, although it has a rounded structure. The internode distance is short, giving it a lush appearance. It has small thorns at the base of the leaves. Medium-sized fruits, larger than limes and generally spherical or slightly cylindrical. Thin and smooth bark, which turns yellow when mature. Not very aromatic. Juicy pulp, with a slightly orange color and a perfectly balanced flavor. It has seeds.

Uses

Its main use comes from the direct consumption of the juice of its fruits. This juice can also be used for the preparation of sorbets or alcoholic cocktails.
