Origin data

The Centennial hybrid is a variegated cultivar, selected from a spontaneous mutation that occurred in a hybrid of the Nagami Kumquat. The other parent of the hybrid is unknown, although it is thought to be a mandarin. The mutation was detected in 1986 in Florida (USA). Its name refers to the coincidence of its discovery with the anniversary of the Fort Pierce Horticultural Research Center (Florida, USA).

Tree and fruit description

Shrub-like tree with vertical growth. Variegated leaves that combine pale green with cream color. Oval fruits, with a more or less prominent neck. Smooth bark, striped in green and yellow in the immature fruit, and orange later, with the reddish stripes less noticeable. The bark is edible. Acidic, juicy pulp, bright orange in color and aromatic. Contains some seeds.

Uses

The fruit holds well on the tree after ripening. It can be used for making jams and preserves. It can also be eaten whole fresh. This selection has high ornamental value.
