Citrus sinensis
(L.) Osbeck
TCF-329

Varietal Group:
Sweet Oranges
Origin:
Italy
Availability:
November - April
Origin data
This variety is surely the result of the selection of a spontaneous mutation that occurred in a sweet orange, which gives it pigmentation. The coloration of this sweet variety is due to the presence of lycopene, in contrast to the anthocyanins found in the so-called “blood oranges.” In citrus fruits, lycopene is also present in Pomelos and Grapefruits. The Blood Orange is a very old selection, especially appreciated in the Middle East and the USA.
Tree and fruit description
Small to medium-sized tree but very productive. Medium-sized, rounded fruit. Bark generally smooth and lightly pigmented. Very juicy pulp, with pigmentation concentrated on the edges of the juice segments. Bland flavor due to lack of acidity, but slightly improves as it matures.
Uses
It is mainly consumed fresh. Its unique sweetness pairs well with green salads and fruit salads.
