The Curaçao bitter orange is an ancient selection out of the bitter oranges that the Spanish brought to this island at the beginning of the 16th century. Pais Kòrsou is a Caribbean island where the different environmental conditions facilitated the development of this particular bitter orange.
The tree is similar to the typical Seville Bitter Orange. The fruits are medium-sized and flattened, with a semi-rough, deep orange rind. The pulp is juicy, with a good balance between bitterness and sweetness. The dried green rind is used in pharmacy, while the ripen rind is used to make alcoholic beverages such as Curaçao, Triple Sec or Grand Marnier.
