Origin data
Wekiwa is classified as a tangelolo, as it is a hybrid between a grapefruit and the Sampson tangelo. It gets its name from a small town located in central Florida (USA), Wekiwa Spring. It is characterized by the color of the pulp of its fruits and the organoleptic quality of these.
Tree and fruit description
Uniform growth tree, although with a slight vertical tendency, productive and vigorous in patterns that enhance this character. Dark green leaves, many oval or almost round, slightly wavy, with slightly winged petioles. Short internodes, which favor the foliage appearance of the tree. Medium-small fruits, spherical to oval in shape, with both ends slightly flattened. Thin and smooth bark, marked by essential oil glands, bright yellow when ripe and, in very favorable conditions, may show some pink pigmentation. Typical apical ring. Pink, juicy pulp, with segments separated by thin septa. Balanced taste between sweet and slight acidic hints and the typical bitterness of grapefruit, almost tropical. Few or no seeds.
Uses
Ideal variety for fresh consumption or for making juices. It combines very well in vegetable salads or fruit salads.
