Origin data
The Owari satsuma was the most cultivated in Japan in the early 20th century. It originated in the present-day Aichi Prefecture, formerly known as Owari, apparently as a result of a spontaneous mutation of the ancient cultivar Irikiri. It is characterized by the size of its fruits and its rapid entry into production. Before the emergence of the wase group cultivars, it was considered an early satsuma.
Tree and fruit description
A vigorous and highly productive tree, with a more compact shape than other satsumas. Leaves are lanceolate with a non-winged petiole, typical of satsuma. The fruit is spherical and flattened at the poles, medium-large in size compared to other satsumas. The skin is smooth, thin, of intense orange color, and easy to peel. Seedless. The pulp is of intense orange color, very juicy, sweet, and has a delicate aroma. The fruit does not hold well on the tree after ripening.
