Origin data
The Naranjo Piña is an old selection that was found at the Naranjera Station of Levante in Burjassot (Valencia, Spain) and was transferred to the Citrus Germplasm Bank of IVIA in Moncada (Valencia, Spain) without any information about its origin or provenance. It is characterized by producing small oranges with low acidity, although not as low as that of the Acidless Oranges. Its name likely references the sweet and slightly fruity flavor of the juice from its fruits.
Tree and fruit description
Round-shaped tree of medium vigor and productive. It tends to bear fruit in terminal clusters. Fruits are rather small, with a predominantly rounded morphology that features a slightly depressed style zone and occasionally a smooth basal crown. The bark reaches a bright orange color at maturity, but with a yellowish tint and a somewhat grainy texture. The flesh is soft orange in color, juicy and sweet, with low acidity, although the acidity is noticeable and gives a fruity flavor to the juice. It has seeds.
Uses
Mid-season variety that could be classified in a subgroup of low-acid varieties, which can be consumed both fresh and as juice. Given its organoleptic characteristics, it may have culinary applications in the preparation of sauces and citrus marinades.
