Origin data

Natsudaidai refers to a group of varieties originated in Japan. It is believed that the origin of this group is a natural hybrid produced in the current Yamaguchi Prefecture towards the end of the 19th century, but its parentage has not been determined. There are two main groups within the Natsudaidai. The first derives from the original hybrid and consists of late-maturing varieties (hence their name, as "natsu" means "summer" in Japanese) that are more acidic. The second group comes from a mutation of the original group discovered in 1935 in the garden of Yukata Kawano, in Oika Prefecture, consisting of early-maturing and less acidic varieties.

Tree and fruit description

The tree is vigorous, with large dark green leaves. The fruit is large, with an oblate shape and may have a slight neck. It has a slight depression at the apical area. Aromatic bark, ranging from golden yellow to orange at the end of maturity. Yellow pulp, with abundant juice and a perfect balance between acidity, bitterness, and sweetness. It contains seeds.

Uses

The fruit matures very well, both on the tree and when harvested at the beginning of its ripening. Its bark has medicinal properties. It is consumed fresh and is also used to make ice creams, sweets, jams, or to flavor beverages.
