Origin data

The Tavares limequat is the result of a controlled hybridization between the Mexican lime and the oval kumquat (Nagami). It is a variety obtained within the breeding program conducted in Florida (USA) in 1909. The name of this selection, Tavares, refers to the city of the same name in the state of Florida. It differs from other limequats by having a higher acidity in its juice and by its floral buds exhibiting a pink coloration, a trait inherited from the lime.

Tree and fruit description

Lush and compact tree, small in size and with good vigor. High ornamental value. Small, oval fruits, though somewhat larger than those of the Nagami kumquat. Strong yellow bark, which can reach orange tones, smooth, fine, tender, and edible. Pale yellow pulp, juicy and very acidic. It has seeds.

Uses

It is consumed fresh and also candied.
