Origin data

Khatta is a natural hybrid between an ancient Mandarin and a Citron, both yet to be determined. It originates from the northeastern region of India. Its fruits show characteristics of both Citrus jambhiri and bitter orange or citron.

Tree and fruit description

Vigorous tree with an upright posture. Both young shoots and flowers are purple. Large fruits with variable shapes, but generally round to oval. They may have a wide and prominent apical nipple. Bark is very adherent to the pulp and has variable texture: smooth, rough, or ribbed. Bright orange color when ripe. Edible albedo, thick, with a mild flavor; it can be somewhat spongy. Sparse yellow pulp, juicy and very acidic in taste.

Uses

This species is used as rootstock in India. Its juice is used as a substitute for lemon, although its flavor is slightly different, with a bitter touch.
