Origin data
This hybrid between the Ichang Papeda and the Rangpur Lime variety Otaitensis has unknown origins. The fruit's characteristics, particularly the essential oils in its peel and the flavor of its juice, are reminiscent of Yuzu, which is where its Western name comes from.
Tree and fruit description
Leafy tree with predominantly erect growth, but tending to form a spherical tree. It has numerous thorns. Large, lanceolate leaves with a marked winged petiole. Medium-sized fruits, similar to Rangpur lime, with a spherical shape and flattened poles. The apical zone is usually depressed, may have an areole and apparent style insertion. Aromatic, thick, bulging bark that turns orange at maturity. It is characterized by its sticky texture. The pulp is yellow-orange, juicy, and aromatic, with a bitter and acidic, fresh juice. It has numerous monoembryonic seeds. Once ripe, the fruit holds well on the tree, but tends to dry out and puff up its bark.
Uses
Both its grated peel and its juice can be used to flavor sauces, desserts, or drinks.
