Varietal Group:

Lemons and their hybrids

Origin:

Italy

Availability:

Origin data

The Bicolor is undoubtedly a natural hybrid of lemon and citron, but its origin is unknown. Its history reveals that it was discovered in the mid-20th century by Azienda Tintori in the botanical garden created by the Duchess of Parma in 1820, in the city of Lucca, in the Italian Tuscany (hence its other name). Its main name refers to the color of the bark of its fruits, which is green-violet even near maturity.

Tree and fruit description

The fruit is medium-sized, ellipsoidal, and has a small apical nipple. The skin is moderately rough and occasionally ribbed. The albedo is edible, of medium thickness, and very sweet. The pulp is moderately juicy and very acidic.

Uses

The albedo can be used fresh, in green or fruit salads. The combination of rind and albedo can be candied, and the juice can be used to season drinks or broths.
