Origin data

The Bitter Orange is a natural hybrid resulting from a cross between a Pummelo and an ancient Mandarin, originally from the northeast of India, which arrived in the Iberian Peninsula through the Arabs (11th century). The Bartolí Bitter Orange is an ancient selection rescued within the program for the recovery of ancient varieties by Todolí Citrus Foundation. It was obtained from a citrus tree over 100 years old found on the El Bartolí estate of the Foundation. This specimen underwent a treatment involving the removal of its surrounding soil around the root system, elimination of the taproot, and propagation of the shoots that emerged from its radial roots.

Tree and fruit description

Vigorous and productive tree. Large leaves with a pleasant and distinctive oil. Oblate fruit, medium-sized. Bark of deep orange color, slightly rough with numerous oily glands of strong aroma. Juicy pulp, with a sour taste and pronounced bitterness. Contains seeds.

Uses

The Bitter Orange Bartolí is characterized by its great persistence on the tree, its good storage, and the intensity of its essential oils. It is especially suitable for making jams and desserts.
