Origin data

Direct hybrid between the papeda Micrantha and an ancestral mandarin. It is assumed to have a very ancient origin in the cultivation area of Java. Jeruk means citrus in Indonesian. It is cultivated almost exclusively on the island of Java, from sea level up to 350 meters in altitude. The fruit is present in many markets on the island.

Tree and fruit description

Tree with a rounded shape, dense foliage, and almost thornless branches. Oval, alternate leaves with slightly winged petioles, very fragrant when rubbed. Small, globose fruit flattened at the poles, with a slight depression in the style area. Bark slightly bulging and rough, shiny dark green when immature, yellow at maturity. Highly aromatic. Yellow-green pulp, sour and very fragrant.

Uses

The aromatic juice of unripe fruits is used as a condiment to enhance the flavor of typical Indonesian dishes (sambal, soto, bahmie). The leaves are used as a seasoning in sauces for meats, and also to scent the washing water.
