Lemons and their hybrids
Origin:
Italy
Availability:
October - April
Origin data
Although its name in Italian (Poncino amalfitano) indicates that it is a citron, this variety could be the result of a cross between a lemon tree and a citron. Its name refers to a coastal town south of Naples with a great tradition in lemon tree cultivation.
Tree and fruit description
Vigorous tree with an open habit. Wide and large leaves. Large fruits, predominantly cylindrical in shape, which may have a small apical nipple and a flat base with a depressed insertion point. The bark is thin, smooth but somewhat swollen, occasionally displaying longitudinal striations; very aromatic, it emits a strong and pleasant smell upon mere contact. Edible, thick, sweet albedo. Scarce pulp, very acidic, bitter, and moderately juicy. Contains seeds.
Uses
The peel can be used to flavor dishes and beverages. The fresh albedo can be a complement to various dishes, or used in green or fruit salads.
