The Bitter Orange (Citrus aurantium) tree is a natural hybrid between Pummelo and ancient Mandarin. It is native to the south of the Himalayas and northeast India, evergreen, vigorous and very productive. Apparently it was the Arabs who spread it around the Mediterranean basin in the 10th century, although there is also a theory that it was the French Crusaders who introduced it to Europe.

The fruit is round and usually ripens in late autumn, and can remain on the tree for several months. Its flowers are used to make neroli, one of the most prized essential oils. Its bark is also used in the world of perfumery. The Bitter Orange is used to make the best-known citrus marmalades.
