Murcott is a cultivar that is thought to have originated from the USDA citrus breeding program in Florida in the early 20th century. It is a tangor resulting from a hybridization between a King mandarin and an unknown sweet orange. Starting in 1944, it gained great popularity in Florida. Much later, a mutation of Murcott led to the Moroccan variety Afourer.

Tree and fruit description

Medium vigor tree, vertical growth, and mainly terminal fruits. Productive, but with a tendency for alternation. It is characterized by its sensitivity to cold. Fruit of medium size, subglobose morphology, and flattened poles. Fine, smooth bark of bright orange color, easy to peel. Bright orange pulp, juicy, with a sweet taste and a subtle hint of acidity. It has seeds.

Uses

It is marketed for fresh consumption, and its juice is of high quality.
