Other hybrid Mandarins, Tangors, and Tangelos
Tangelo Mapo
Citrus deliciosa × Citrus paradisi
TCF-032

Varietal Group:
Mandarins and their hybrids
Origin:
USA
Availability:
November - January
Origin data
Most tangelos have been obtained within breeding programs and are the result of controlled crossings between grapefruit and mandarins. The Mapo tangelo was obtained from the crossbreeding of a Duncan grapefruit and a Mediterranean mandarin. It is characterized by the color of its fruit's skin, which, unlike what occurs in other tangelos, can remain green even when the fruits are mature.
Tree and fruit description
Tree of medium vigor, with an open habit and a tendency to form plants with a spherical morphology. It has thorns and is productive. The leaves are lanceolate, showing characteristics of its two parents but with a non-winged petiole. The fruit is medium-large, which may or may not have a gentle basal neck and a flat apical area. Thin bark, which peels well, smooth or slightly granular, green or yellowish-green when ripe. Very melting pulp, orange-yellow in color, juicy. Mixed flavor, with the sweetness of tangerine and a bitter touch of grapefruit. It has seeds.
Uses
Interesting variety mainly for fresh consumption due to the softness of its flesh. Also suitable for making homemade juices. The Italian company Campari produces a liqueur called Mapo that presumably includes this variety among its ingredients.
