Origin data

The Fortune hybrid was developed within the citrus improvement program at the Indigo experimental station (California, USA) and was introduced in 1964. It was thought to be a hybrid between a clementine and the Dancy mandarin, but more recent studies, based on its sensitivity to the fungus Alternaria alternata, revealed that the male parent is the Orlando tangelo. Despite being a very promising variety, the expansion of its cultivation has been hindered both by its sensitivity to Alternaria and by its ability to pollinate clementines and produce seeds in them.

Tree and fruit description

Vigorous, bushy tree with an open and spherical growth habit. Oblate fruit of medium size and intense orange color. Smooth, thin bark, attached to the pulp. Bright orange pulp with a high juice content that maintains a good level of acidity at the end of its ripeness. Does not have seeds in the absence of cross-pollination.

Uses

Excellent late variety for fresh consumption.
