Origin data

The Satsuma Okitsu originated at the Japanese experimental station of the same name in 1940. It was the result of the selection of a nucellar embryo from a previously pollinated Miyagawa Wase satsuma. It improves upon its parent by having less acidity and more sugar, as well as maturing a few days earlier. It also exhibits better post-harvest behavior. It is a cultivar traditionally popular in Japan.

Tree and fruit description

Productive tree, but small in size and not very vigorous. Small leaves, dark green in color and with smooth edges. It produces flowers and fruits in clusters. The fruit is spherical and slightly flattened at the poles, of medium size. Smooth, very thin bark, bright orange in color and easy to peel. Practically seedless. The pulp is bright orange, juicy, and sweeter than other satsumas from the wase group, although it retains the typical aroma of satsumas.

Uses

Fresh consumption.
