Origin data
The Lima Otaitensis gets its name from a historical confusion, as it was initially described by Risso in 1813, who received it from Tahiti (Otaheite) and named it Citrus taitensis. Subsequently, Risso and Poiteau referred to it as C. otaitensis, and finally, after a better characterization, it was agreed that it is a cultivar of Rangpur lime, which is how it received its current scientific name. Like all Rangpur limes, it is not actually a lime, but rather an acid mandarin resulting from the crossing of an old mandarin and a citron. The main difference between the Lima Otaitensis and other Rangpur limes is that its juice is sweet due to the absence of acid.
Tree and fruit description
Compact tree with dense, dark foliage. Its shoots and flowers are purple, although the fruits are not acidic. Medium-sized fruits between Rangpur, with an oblate or spherical morphology and may have a smooth basal neck and apical nipple. Orange flesh, very juicy, non-acidic, tasteless.
Uses
Cultivate for ornamental value. The fruits can be used in the preparation of sauces or desserts.
