Citrus unshiu × C. crassifolia
TCF-026

Varietal Group:
Kumquats and their hybrids
Origin:
USA
Availability:
January - April
Origin data
Hybrid obtained through a controlled hybridization between a Satsuma and a Kumquat Meiwa. It was apparently produced in Washington DC (USA) in the early 1930s, and was described in Florida in 1935. Its common name, Orangequat, refers to a hybrid of orange and kumquat, but it is not; it also does not resemble either the appearance of the tree or the fruit, as it is not similar to an orange tree but rather resembles a mandarin tree.
Tree and fruit description
Slow-growing tree of rather small size, but with an open habit and very productive. Dark green leaves tend to curve towards the upper side. Large fruit among kumquats, with oval or obovate morphology, featuring a characteristic basal neck and may show a small apical bump. Intense orange bark at maturity, relatively thick and finely pocked. Medium, spongy albedo. Juicy and acidic pulp, divided into 7 heart-shaped segments. Some seeds may be present.
Uses
The fruit ripens early and stays well on the tree. A variety with high ornamental value. The fruits are used to make an excellent jam.
