Kumquats and their hybrids

Origin:

USA

Availability:

Origin data

The Eustis Limequat is the result of a controlled hybridization between the Mexican lime and the round kumquat (Marumi). Like other known limequats, it is a selection obtained within the breeding program conducted by W.T. Swingle at the USDA in Florida (USA) in 1909. The name of this selection, Eustis, refers to the city of the same name in the state of Florida and was coined by Swingle himself in 1913. It is the most widely cultivated limequat.

Tree and fruit description

Small tree with an open growth habit. Fruits similar in size to the Marumi kumquat, but somewhat more oval. They hold less on the tree than those of the kumquat. Smooth bark, light yellow in full maturity and sweeter than that of its female parent, the Mexican lime. The bark is edible. Crisp, juicy, acidic, and very aromatic flesh. It has seeds.

Uses

The tree has ornamental use. The fruits are used fresh in cocktails or vegetable or fruit salads. Their juice is used as a condiment, replacing lemon or lime. They can be candied whole or made into jams, as well as consumed whole and fresh.
