The Gargano area is located in the Apulia (Puglia) region of Italy, an area with an ancient tradition of citrus cultivation due to its favorable climate, soil, and water conditions. The Femminello lemon from Gargano derives from the common Femminello but is protected by a geographical indication (PGI). It is characterized by its high vitamin C content and its fragrance when grown in this area along the Adriatic Sea.
Tree and fruit description
Vigorous and productive tree, with a vertical growth tendency. Lanceolate leaves but with rounded tips and slightly serrated edges. Medium-sized fruits, dense, heavy, with an oblong morphology and a smooth apical nipple (fusillo subcultivar). Smooth bark, bright yellow in color and moderately thick. Highly aromatic. Albedo with a pleasant flavor, slightly thick, but with an unappealing texture. Yellow, juicy, acidic, and aromatic flesh. Contains seeds.
Uses
It can be consumed fresh, as a condiment, or transformed into juices, ice creams, cakes, jams, liqueurs... The albedo can be processed for the production of creams, purees...
