Varietal Group:
Lemons and their hybrids
Origin:
Italy
Availability:
All year round
Origin data
The Carrubaro lemon was obtained by selecting a spontaneous mutation of the common Femminello lemon in Sicily (Italy). Its name comes from the word "carrubo," which means carob in Italian, a plant that is very common on the island. Like most selections of Femminello, with proper cultural practices, it produces fruit almost all year round.
Tree and fruit description
Very vigorous and productive tree with an upright growth habit. Large leaves that are darker in color than other lemon trees. The flowers are medium-sized but very fragrant. The fruit is small to medium-sized, oval, with an apical nipple and a basal neck. The persistent style at the nipple is characteristic. The bark is slightly swollen, bright yellow in color, thick, and very fragrant. The albedo is moderately thick, pleasant in flavor, but gummy. The pulp is acidic with a bitter aftertaste, juicy, and contains several seeds. The central axis is hollow.
Uses
Interesting the use of its juice as a condiment, somewhat different from common lemon.
