Origin data
The Bergamoto Fantastico is a recent hybrid obtained by crossing the Femminello and Castagnaro bergamots. There is no concrete data available, but it is presumed to have originated in Italy. It is one of the three varieties of bergamot cultivated in Calabria (Italy), being the most sought after. It maintains the quality of the essential oils from the Femminello variety and the vigor and productivity of its other parent, the Castagnaro bergamot, and its maturation is slightly later.
Tree and fruit description
Vigorous and productive tree. Its fruits are larger than those of Femminello, with a pear-shaped morphology and persistent style. Bark is bright yellow at its optimum ripeness, thin, slightly rough, and very aromatic, containing high-quality essential oils. Its flowers and leaves are also very aromatic.
Uses
It is used in the extraction of essential oils for high perfumery, cosmetics, or aromatherapy, as well as for the food industry (liquors, sweets, Earl Grey tea…). It is also used for the preparation of jams. Recently, it has been demonstrated that its juice, like that of its relatives, has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and cholesterol-lowering properties.
