Origin data

The Cleopatra Mandarin is an ancient mandarin possibly originating from India, where it is known as chota or billi kichilli. The name Cleopatra Mandarin was assigned upon its arrival in the U.S. in the late 19th century. It is an acidic mandarin related, for example, to the Shikwasa Mandarin. It is characterized by its resistance to various abiotic factors, such as salinity or limestone in the soil, which is why it is used as a rootstock for grafting other citrus fruits, primarily mandarins, oranges, lemon trees, or grapefruits.

Tree and fruit description

Vigorous tree, with a spherical and attractive shape. It has no thorns and is re-flowering, so it bears fruit for most of the year. Small, lanceolate leaves of dark green color. Flattened, small fruits with a characteristic depression at the apex. Slightly rough bark, thin and bright orange at the end of ripening. The pulp is bright orange, acidic, and moderately juicy. It has seeds.

Uses

In addition to being a rootstock for other citrus, Cleopatra has ornamental value due to its appearance and its ability to produce fruit almost year-round. The juice from the fruits can be used to make sauces or in desserts.
