Origin data
The Berna lemon, also known as Bernia, Verna, or Vernia, is a variety of unknown origin, and it is speculated that it may have originated from a mutation in Italian lemon trees called "Monachello" introduced in the region of Murcia. It is characterized by being re-flowering and producing fruits throughout the year, although with uneven quality. Additionally, it stands out for its ability to maintain the quality of ripe fruits without harvesting. In comparison to the Fino lemon, the fruits have less juice, but also fewer seeds.
Tree and fruit description
Vigorous tree with a rounded growing habit and fewer thorns than other lemon trees. Leaves are markedly pointed and aromatic. The fruit has a thick yellow skin, which aids in its preservation. It has an oval shape, with a pronounced neck and an apical nipple. The skin is aromatic and can be rough or smooth, depending on the ripening season. The flesh is acidic, yellow, and juicy. It has few or no seeds.
Uses
There are different commercial clones of Berna lemons. It is one of the main table lemons in Spain.
