This story begins on a quiet street in the Spanish village of Palmera, with the air permeated by the scent of citrus fruits. The journey passes through orchards of oranges, tangerines and lemons, the same fruits that fill supermarket shelves around the world.
In 2022, Spain exported €3.45 billion worth of citrus, mostly to northern Europe, making it the world’s largest citrus exporter. This thriving industry, especially in Valencia, depends on these endless monocultures of trees, which create a sea of green dotted with bright orange and yellow specks. Hidden within this uniform landscape, however, is a surprising haven of diversity: the Todolí Citrus Foundation.
