Varietal Group:

Mandarins and their hybrids

Origin:

Italy

Availability:

December - March

Origin data

Amoa 8 was obtained within the citrus improvement program of the Research Center for Citrus (CRA) in Acireale (Catania, Sicily, Italy). It was the result of a hybridization carried out around 1990 between a Blood Orange and a Mediterranean Mandarin. The curiosity lies in the fact that the original crossing was conducted with the aim of obtaining new pigmented oranges, but the result of this cross turned out to be much more similar to a mandarin.

Tree and fruit description

Tree of moderate vigor and leaves of a bright green color. Small fruits, with rough skin and light weight, as they do not contain much juice. The skin is thick and reaches very intense and bright red tones at the end of ripening. Flesh severely pigmented by the presence of anthocyanins. Mixed flavor reminiscent of its two parents (orange and tangerine). It has seeds.

Uses

Its characteristics give it great ornamental value, and its juice adds color and flavor to drinks or citrus dressings.
