A few days ago, Todolí Citrus Fundació welcomed some very special visitors: the students of Col·legi Públic 9 d’Octubre in Palmera, the Palmera campus of CRA Mondúver-Safor.
Throughout the morning, four groups of children aged between 4 and 12 visited the Foundation. Each visit was adapted to the age and interests of the group, bringing them closer to the world of citrus fruits in an engaging, participatory and accessible way.
For these students, learning about citrus fruits also means gaining a better understanding of the landscape in which they live. Palmera and their school are surrounded by citrus groves, a daily presence that forms part of the identity, economy and culture of their surroundings. Understanding the richness of this botanical heritage is a first step towards helping future generations value it, preserve it and carry it forward.
Together, we explored the history and evolution of citrus fruits, their morphology, and the parts of a tree and their functions. We also discussed the colour of the fruits and its relationship with sweet and sour flavours—a clue that can sometimes be misleading.
The visit included questions, games and small challenges. The students shared how many citrus varieties they knew and were encouraged to observe, smell and learn through curiosity.
It was a morning full of discoveries, smiles and shared learning. We would especially like to thank and recognise the commitment of the teachers who accompanied the students during the visit and who, every day, help awaken their curiosity and strengthen their connection with the land. Their work is essential to ensuring that this heritage remains alive in the hands of those who will inherit it.
They left full of vitamin C… and, we hope, with plenty of new questions about the richness and diversity of the citrus world.
